🎈 Noriko’s Ayu story

Actually, I am an amateur angler myself and have very little experience in fishing.
You know much much more about fishing than I do.
Netherless, that does not mean that I have no connection with fishing at all.

Well, let me tell you my petit fishing story....

My house is located, not in riverside, but near the river.
I came to live in this area because my father was an angler.
He moved here because he could go fishing anytime he wanted.

His favorite pastime was Tomozuri(live decoy fishing) for Ayu.

-Do you know what Tomozuri is?-

I learned that it is not so popular in the world though.
What is Tomozuri is that, instead of using bait or a lure, you attach a fishing line and an anchor hook to a live decoy called tomoayu, and let the decoy swim in the river.
The decoy Ayu is then allowed to swim in the river, and a wild Ayu that claims its territory and strikes the decoy is caught by the anchor hook.
This is a traditional fishing method that has been used in Japan since the Edo period, over 300 years ago.

Ayu has long been known in Japanese culture as a seasonal delicacy of summer and is used as a seasonal word in haiku and other forms of Japanese poetry.

As a symbol of freshness and coolness, Japan also has popular Japanese sweets (wagashi) in the shape of Ayu fish.

Although not for Tomozuri fishing, Ayu lures in beautiful colors are sold by various manufacturers. This may be because Ayu is closely connected with Japanese culture.
