A 23mm topwater crank built to convert the bites you keep missing.
Killer Bug 23 is a topwater crankbait at the size fish actually commit to - 23mm. At rest most of the body sits below the surface, a deliberately deep waterline, so the fish that come up to a surface lure and then turn away at the last moment finally take it. Buoyancy is kept deliberately low, which means even a soft pecking bite loads the hook.
The action is a wide wobble that runs briskly on and just under the surface. The broad face, lip included, pushes a surprising amount of water for a bait this small, so it announces itself well beyond its size.
The basic method: land it with the sharp "plop" of a beetle hitting the water, hold for two or three seconds and let a fish commit. No take - wind a little, let it wobble, then stop again. Alternating between winding to attract and pausing to feed is the whole trick. Rod tip up and a dead-slow retrieve gives you a waking presentation; a fine, fast shake makes it look like an insect struggling on the film.
For managed-pond trout. The card to play on terrestrial patterns, or when spoons and cranks are getting looked at but not eaten.
